April 10, 2013 – Draper, UT Canyon Bicycles Racing Team sent Erik Slack, Logan Phippen, Tyler Riedesel and Hunter Huffman from Salt Lake City up to Boise, Idaho with Garrett Burbidge driving over from Bend, OR to compete at the Tour of Ontario. An early morning start to the Stage 1 Time Trial set the tone for the rest of the weekend. With a handful of strong competitors it would be important to have more than a few good rides and with Erik winning the TT, Tyler placing 4th and Hunter in 10th there would be more than a few cards to play the rest of the race.
Stage 2 Criterium: With Erik in the lead it was clear he was not going to be getting away which opened up the door for the rest of the guys. All the rest of the guys played their cards in trying to get up the road and Tyler won the lottery and was able to stay away for the better part of 20 minutes but was pulled back. Sensing a lull he went again and was able to stay away for the win. Garrett, Logan and Hunter helped Erik in a bit of a chaotic finale to be able to win the field sprint for 2nd with Garrett rolling in for a 5th place.
Stage 3 Road Race: With 2 on the podium already the day was looking good. An extremely windy day was on tap with the threat of a downpour at any time. The first time (of 12 times) up the climb Tyler upped the pace and was able to once again get up the road with 2 others. Within minutes he was in virtual GC win and the rest of the guys had a free ride in the back to watch other teams work. 2/3rds of the way through the race the break was reabsorbed and at this point Logan, Hunter and Garrett all helped at the front to keep the pace high going into the climb. With that Tyler and Erik were able to get up the road with 2 others and ride it to the finish with Erik taking the stage win and overall and Tyler coming through with 3rd on the stage and 2nd overall.
It was a great weekend and a strong team effort from all and we look forward to riding the success onto our next races.
